2008 WOOLLAHRA SMALL SCULPTURE PRIZE - 536 New South Head Rd, Double Bay - 24 October-2 November 2008

I was a finalist again in the 2008 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize with 'Soft Edge'.  It was a cube constructed of many small crocheted cubes.  The name was an obvious play on hard edge abstraction, but of course it was soft...geddit?....

The local paper did a cute story about it....

2008 BLACKTOWN CITY ART EXHIBITION - Blacktown Arts Centre, 78 Flushcombe Rd, Blacktown - 20 September-18 October 2008

In 2008 I won the painting section of the Blacktown City Art Exhibition with a 3 panelled painting called 'Red, Yellow, Blue'.  The paintings were constructed from individually painted MDF blocks which were then glued together into squares.

I got to experience that wonderful moment when 2 visitors looked at the work, saw the '1st Prize' label then slowly shook their heads as they walked away...

MAKING AND BREAKING PATTERN: NEW WORK - The University Gallery, University of Newcastle - 14 May-21 June 2008

'Making and Breaking Pattern: New Work' was the third incarnation of the exhibitions curated by Judith Duquemin that had occurred at Tin Sheds in 2006 and Carnegie Gallery in 2007.  This show included work by Elizabeth Day, Judith Duquemin, Matthys Gerber, Justin Trendall and myself.

This time I exhibited the whole 12 'Square Paintings' as one block, as well as a re-arrangement of the crocheted panels as a floor piece.

IMPLEMENTING IMPRECISION, Factory 49, 49 Shepherd St, Marrickville - 26 March-5 April, 2008

In 'Implementing Imprecision' I exhibited 3 works - another re-configured version of the crocheted cubes, a painting that developed from my previous 'Square' paintings, and another crocheted wall work.

The crocheted cubes had been continuously added to with each showing, this time the work was on the floor and started going up the walls.

The painting was a circle version of the square paintings that I had been producing.

The crocheted wall work was an accumulation of text. I had been involved in (email) discussions of an exhibition that never eventuated.  The project had started positively, but had deteriorated when nobody could decide how the show should be organised - I collected all the emails and chose my favourite quotes that illustrated the collapse of the project - the title of the work also came from the text within the emails.

THE 2008 LIBRIS AWARDS - Artspace Mackay, Civic Centre Precinct, Mackay - 7th-10th February 2008

I had a work accepted into the 2008 Libris Awards, which is the biennial Australian Artists' Books Prize Exhibition held in Mackay in Queensland (no relation....although....actually, John Mackay apparently was a relation....note the correct pronunciation....).

But back to the artwork.... I created a crocheted book called 'Storybook'.  It had 4 pages with a front and back cover and was a very simple story, which got more complicated towards the end...
